One of the most representative dialects of Wu Chinese (Wu dialect) used in Shanghai, China. It is also called "Shanghai dialect" or "Hugo". Since the opening of Shanghai's port and the establishment of the concession in the 1840s, Shanghai has seen a rapid population increase due to migration from various regions as it developed into a modern commercial and industrial city. According to a domicile survey conducted in the 1930s, the population of Shanghai (city district) is said to be 25% natives, 48% from Wu-speaking areas in the surrounding areas such as Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Ningbo, and Shaoxing, and 27% from other non-Wu-speaking areas.
