Gengo Ohtaka

Japanese: 大高源吾 - おおたかげんご

1672-1703 A samurai from the early Edo period.
Born in the 12th year of Kanbun. A samurai of the Ako Domain in Harima (Hyogo Prefecture). One of the 47 Ronin. Served as a junior servant, head of the meal staff, money magistrate, and koshimonokata. After the death of the domain's lord, Asano Naganori, he went to Edo and, taking the alias Wakiya Shinbei, sought out the residence of Kira Yoshinaka. After the raid, he committed seppuku on February 4, 16th year of Genroku. He was 32 years old. His name was Tadataka. His haiku name was Koyo. His works include "Teichou Kiko" and "Futatsu no Bamboo."

寛文12年生まれ。播磨(はりま)(兵庫県)赤穂(あこう)藩士。四十七士のひとり。中小姓,膳番元方,金奉行,腰物方を兼ねた。藩主浅野長矩(ながのり)の死後,江戸にでて,脇屋新兵衛と変名し吉良義央(よしなか)邸をさぐった。討ち入り後,元禄(げんろく)16年2月4日切腹。32歳。名は忠雄(ただたか)。俳号は子葉。著作に「丁丑紀行」,編著に「二つの竹」。
