1347‐78 Italian saint. Born to a family of silk dyers in Siena, she joined the Dominican Order in 1362 and devoted herself to caring for those suffering from the plague and leprosy, while also helping to bring the Pope back to Rome from the Avignon captivity. Her mystical visions are depicted in artworks as scenes in which she receives a ring from Christ and becomes engaged to him, as did Catherine of Alexandria, chooses between gold and a crown of thorns offered by Christ, and receives the stigmata, as did Francis of Assisi.
