Tamaumi Hydra - Tamaumi Hydra

A marine animal belonging to the family Hydrohydridae, order Hydroids, class Hydrozoa, phylum Coelenterata. It forms colonies by attaching itself to coastal rocks or seaweed. The colonies are irregularly tufted and reach a height of several centimeters. The trunks and branches of the colony are brown, with many horizontal rings arranged in a regular pattern. There is not much difference in thickness between the trunks and branches, and the trunks do not form thick bundles. The hydro flowers at the end of each branch are pale pink, club-shaped, and have an opening at the top. There are 20 to 30 tentacles scattered on the hydro flowers. The tips of these tentacles are spherical and contain nematocysts. When the colony matures, egg-shaped reproductive bodies are produced between the tentacles of the hydro flowers. There are males and females, but neither of them become jellyfish and swim away. They are commonly found in shallow seas from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and are widely distributed in other parts of the world, including the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean.

腔腸(こうちょう)動物門ヒドロ虫綱ヒドロイド目タマウミヒドラ科に属する海産動物。海岸の岩石や海藻上に付着して群体を形成している。群体は不規則な叢(そう)状で高さ数センチメートルに達する。群体の幹や枝の部分は褐色で、規則的に並ぶ多くの横環がみられる。幹と枝の太さには大きな差はなく幹が太い束となることはない。各枝の先端にみられるヒドロ花は淡紅色で棍棒(こんぼう)状、上端に口が開いている。ヒドロ花上には20～30本の触手が散らばって存在している。これら触手はその先端が球状で、そこには刺胞が入っている。群体は成熟するとヒドロ花の触手の間に卵形の生殖体が生ずる。生殖体には雌雄の別があるが、いずれもクラゲとなって泳ぎだすことはない。北海道から九州まで各地の浅海に普通にみられ、またほかの太平洋地域、大西洋など世界各地に広く分布する。
