...A city located 12km south of Naha on the southwestern tip of Okinawa Island (main island), Okinawa Prefecture. In 1961, it merged with the neighboring villages of Sanwa, Kanegusuku, and Takamine, and in 1971, it was incorporated as a city. Population: 53,496 (1995). The former town of Itoman was a fishing town, and brave Itoman fishermen have long been active in the waters of mainland Japan, the Philippines, the Malay Peninsula, Java, Sumatra, Celebes, Borneo, New Guinea, and other places, using a unique fishing method called "Agya", but their presence has now faded. It is currently designated as a third-class fishing port, and aims to become a relay base for southern fishing. ...
