…He focused on research into dephosphorization, which was a problem with the Bessemer process, and in 1877, he discovered that when he lined an experimental converter with quicklime and water glass, it was highly effective at dephosphorization. From this, he came up with the idea that dephosphorization could be achieved by lining the converter with a basic material such as dolomite, and with the help of his cousin PC Gilchrist (1851-1935), he successfully conducted experiments in a converter at a steelworks and obtained a patent in 1878.
