Archaeology studies the relationship between the descriptions in the Christian holy books, the Old Testament and the New Testament, and historical facts. Along with Buddhist archaeology, it forms part of religious archaeology. In terms of time, it mainly deals with the period from the 2nd millennium BC, when biblical studies first recognized the consistency between tradition and history, to the completion of the New Testament, that is, from the Middle Bronze Age to the Middle Roman period. Geographically, it focuses on Western Asia and the Mediterranean region, especially Palestine. It began in the 19th century when American E. Robinson (1794-1863) conducted a field survey of place names in the Bible. The subsequent development of biblical archaeology revealed that the Bible was deeply rooted in the ancient culture of the region.
