In Christianity, simony is the buying and selling of priesthood and its powers through money or goods. The English word simony comes from the story of Simon the Magician, who tried to buy the power of the Holy Spirit from Peter (Acts 8:18ff.). Today, simony is strictly prohibited in all churches, but it seems to have been practiced after the three centuries of persecution of the early church, and the Council of Chalcedon (451) banned it by decree. However, it was widely practiced in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and although simony was sometimes excommunicated as heresy or blasphemy, the evil practice did not stop and was one of the factors in the Protestant Reformation. After the 16th century, this custom fell into disuse due to the government's confiscation and transfer of church property.
