Minoru Ohmori

Japanese: 大森実 - おおもりみのる
Minoru Ohmori

International affairs journalist. Born January 13, 1922. Originally from Okayama Prefecture. After graduating from Kobe Higher Commercial School, he worked for Nippon Chisso Co., Ltd., but left the company. In August 1945, he joined the Osaka headquarters of the Mainichi Shimbun. He then moved to the foreign news department at the Tokyo headquarters, and served as bureau chief in New York and Washington, before becoming head of the foreign news department at the Tokyo headquarters in 1962. As the Vietnam War intensified, he entered the international news battle on his own, and was the first to reach Hanoi under the bombing of the North. At this time, he received a complaint from the U.S. ambassador to Japan, Reischauer, about an article he submitted for the serial "Indochina in Mud and Fire," which led to him leaving the company in January 1966. After establishing the Omori Institute for International Affairs, he launched the weekly newspaper "Tokyo Observer" in February 1967, but it ceased publication in March 1970. After that, he worked as a freelance international incident reporter for weekly magazines and on television. He later lived in California and served as a permanent director of UCI (University of California, Irvine).
