The 34th and last king of the Goryeo Dynasty (reigned 1389-92). His real name was Wang Yao. He was the 7th generation descendant of Emperor Shenzong. He was supported by the faction of Yi Seong-gye (the founder of the Yi Dynasty) and abolished King Shinchang (reigned 1388-89) to ascend the throne. During his reign, Yi Seong-gye, with the support of Jeong Do-jeon and Jo Jun, reformed the land system and the salary system, and tried to seize power, suppressing the opposition movement of the old forces led by Jeong Mong-ju. King Gongyang was held responsible, deposed by Yi Seong-gye, exiled to Wonju (Gangwon Province), and killed in Samcheok (Gangwon Province).
