Genital phase

Genital phase

In Freud's psychosexual analysis, this is the final stage of psychosexual development, which refers to the period after puberty when sexual maturity occurs. In this stage, the partial impulses, such as the oral, anal, and phallic impulses of an infant, are integrated into the genital system with the goal of reproductive activity. This is called genital control. Before the genital stage, the goal was to obtain pleasure through the various organs of the body, but at this stage, the goal becomes reproduction, and the individual seeks a sexual object as a person with a personality. When the genital system is established, the ego is no longer subjected to excessive pressure from the id and superego, and is able to use its energy for real activities that are culturally and socially valued, such as academics, art, and sports. On the other hand, if the partial impulses of the pregenital stage are not integrated and affection for the mother and father becomes fixed, a normal genital system does not develop, and various sexual perversions occur.
