Chindonya - Chindonya

Japanese:
Chindonya - Chindonya
Advertising and promotion workers who walk around town in flashy clothing while playing musical instruments. They are so named because they are characterized by the use of drums and gongs. Until the early Showa period, they would go around town alone and deliver a speech, and were called Tozaiya (from the first line of the speech) or Hiromeya (from the opening ceremony). Musicians who provided sound effects during the silent film era lost their jobs with the advent of talkies and joined this industry. Today's lineup generally includes a musical instrument chindon that combines gongs and drums, a clarinet or saxophone, drums, and a flag bearer or flyer hander, but there are also many duos. Since 1955, a national chindonya competition has been held every year in Toyama.
