The Thibaults - The Thibaults

A long novel by French author Martin du Gard. Published between 1922 and 1940. It consists of eight parts: Notebooks in Grey (1922), The Prison School (1922), The Beautiful Season (1923), The Consultation (1928), La Solerina (1928), The Death of the Father (1929), Summer 1914 (1936), and Epilogue (1940). The story first revolves around three young men: Antoine and Jacques, the two sons of Oscar Thibault, a devout Catholic and businessman, and Daniel, the son of Jacques' friend from a Protestant family. Antoine is portrayed as a brilliant, promising doctor and realist; Jacques as an idealist who rebels against his successful, typically bourgeois father and is sent to a juvenile detention center; and Daniel as a precocious hedonist who is the favorite of his mother, the beautiful Madame de Fontanin. The first six volumes of The Thibaults tell the story of how these three protagonists grow through adolescence in a typical bourgeois family before World War I and develop three different personalities.

However, in the seventh volume, "Summer 1914," the focus narrows to Jacques, who ran away from home several years ago and joined the revolutionaries, and now appears as an anti-war activist who is trying to stop the flow of history, and Antoine, an ordinary citizen who has already established a family as a doctor but is at the mercy of the flow of history, and through these two characters, the tense social movements just before the war come to the forefront of the novel. After this volume, which clearly shows the structure of a historical novel, comes the "Epilogue," which is a kind of criticism of such history. Here, the Thibault and Fontanan families are depicted as being in the midst of collapse during the war, with Jacques dying in a plane crash while handing out anti-war leaflets, Daniel becoming disabled on the battlefield, and Antoine not having much time left to live due to poison gas. And throughout the whole story, even though we can see a glimmer of hope for Jean-Paul, an orphaned child born to Jacques and Daniel's sister Jenny, the grey thoughts of Antoine, who now has deep doubts about history and awaits death, run through the whole novel. In this way, the history of the two families overlaps perfectly with the history of World War I itself, completing a rare and magnificent historical novel.

フランスの作家マルタン・デュ・ガールの大河小説。1922～40年刊。『灰色のノート』（1922）、『少年院』（1922）、『美しい季節』（1923）、『診察』（1928）、『ラ・ソレリーナ』（1928）、『父の死』（1929）、『1914年夏』（1936）、『エピローグ』（1940）の八編からなる。敬虔(けいけん)なカトリック教徒で実業家のオスカル・チボーの2人の息子、アントアーヌとジャック、ジャックの友人でプロテスタントの家庭の息子ダニエルの3人の若者を中心に、まず展開されていく。アントアーヌは秀才で将来を嘱望される医師で現実主義者として、ジャックは成功者で典型的なブルジョアの父親に反抗し少年院に入れられる理想主義者として、ダニエルは、母親である美しいフォンタナン夫人の寵愛(ちょうあい)を一身に受ける、ませた享楽主義者として描き出され、『チボー家の人々』最初の6巻では、これら3人の主人公が第一次世界大戦前の典型的なブルジョア家庭で、どのようにしてそれぞれ思春期を経て異なった三つの人格を形成していくかが物語られる。

　しかし第七巻の『1914年夏』になると、焦点は、数年前家出して革命家の群れに投じ、いま歴史の流れを止めようとする反戦主義者として現れるジャックと、すでに医師として一家をなしたが歴史の流れに翻弄(ほんろう)される平凡な市民アントアーヌに絞られ、2人を通じて大戦直前の緊迫した社会の動きそのものが小説の前面にせり出してくる。こうした歴史小説としての結構をはっきりとみせるこの巻のあとに、そのような歴史への批判とでもいった形で『エピローグ』がくる。ここでは、反戦びらをまきながら飛行機事故で墜落したジャックの死後、ダニエルは戦場で身障者となり、アントアーヌも毒ガスのため余命いくばくもないといった、まさに崩壊しつつある大戦中のチボー、フォンタナン両家が描かれる。そしてその全編を貫くのは、ジャックとダニエルの妹ジェンニーとの間に生まれた遺児ジャン・ポールへのかすかな希望がかいまみられるにせよ、いまや歴史への深い懐疑を抱き出した、死を待つアントアーヌの灰色の思念にほかならない。こうして二つの家族の歴史は、そのまま第一次大戦そのものの歴史とぴったり重なり合い、ここにたぐいまれなみごとな歴史小説が完成される。
