Protestantism has only begun to spread in earnest in the last 100 years, and new sects have been gaining strength especially since the end of World War II. Pentecostalism in particular has gained popularity because it understands speaking in tongues (glossararia) as a sign of God's grace through the descent of the Holy Spirit, and is said to have gained 1.5 million followers in Brazil in the 1950s. In Mexico, the Light of the World Church, Luz del Mundo, has been accepted by lower-class workers who have migrated to cities. The key to the success of new Protestant sects that incorporate the sense of solidarity that comes from possession experiences into their belief system lies in the fact that the loneliness of people from rural areas who live at the bottom of cities due to urbanization and industrialization cannot be fully addressed by the Catholic parish system.
