A province in southern Turkey. It borders the Mediterranean Sea to the west, the provinces of Adana and Gaziantep to the north, and Syria to the east. Its area is 5,859 km2 and population is 1.1 million (1990). In addition to the provincial capital Antalya, there are other cities such as Iskenderun. After World War I, the region came under French mandate under the Armistice of Mudros (December 1918). However, the majority of the inhabitants, the Turks, began to resist French rule and launched an ethnic resistance. In 1936, the Turkish government took the issue to the League of Nations, and as a result, it was decided that the area would be decided by a referendum.
