Ejiri
A place name in Ihara County, Suruga Province. In the Middle Ages, it was known as Ejiri-juku or Ejiritsu, and in early modern times, it was a post station on the Tokaido Road. It is now the center of Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture (formerly Shimizu City). According to the entry for July 18, 1187 (Bun'ichi 3) in the Azuma Kagami, it is known that there was a ferry at Ejiri. In 1223, the author of the Kaido-ki reached Ejiri Bay, and it is assumed that it functioned as a post station, albeit on a small scale, at the time. In 1376, the annual tax from the manor of Engaku-ji Temple in Kamakura, located in Suruga Province, was shipped from Ejiri, and under the control of the Imagawa clan, it gradually gained status as a key point of land and sea transportation. After the Takeda clan invaded Suruga, Ejiri Castle was built, using the Tomoe River as an outer moat, and Takeda clan member Anayama Nobukimi (Baisetsu) developed the area into a castle town. In 1601, it was designated as a post station on the Tokaido road, but the port function of Ejiri-tsu was transferred to Shimizu Port, which was built near the mouth of the Tomoe River. In the Edo period, Ejiri-juku had multiple towns, and each town had a town chief to manage the town. According to the Tokaido Post Town Register, the townscape was over 13 blocks from east to west, with a population of 6,498 people, including the six neighboring Kajuku villages, and 1,340 houses, including two honjin (main inns), three wakihonjin (secondary inns), and 40 hatagoya (inns). In the mid-Edo period, it became a production area for Ejiri cotton. It was incorporated into Irie Town in January 1924, and into Shimizu City in February of the same year.

駿河国庵原(いはら)郡の地名。中世には江尻宿・江尻津とみえ,近世には江尻宿として東海道の宿駅であった。現在の静岡県静岡市(旧清水市)の中心部にあたる。《吾妻鏡》文治3年(1187年)7月18日条によると,江尻に渡船があったことが知られる。1223年には《海道(かいどう)記》の筆者が江尻の浦に至っており,当時小規模ながら宿駅の機能をもっていたと推測される。1376年駿河国内にある鎌倉円覚(えんがく)寺の荘園の年貢が江尻から積み出されており,今川氏の支配下にあってしだいに水陸の交通の要衝としての地位を高めていった。武田氏が駿河に侵入したのち,巴(ともえ)川を外堀に利用した江尻城が築かれ,武田一族の穴山信君(のぶきみ)(梅雪(ばいせつ))がこの地を城下町として整備した。1601年東海道の宿駅に指定されたが,江尻津がもっていた湊としての機能は巴川河口付近に建設された清水湊に移された。江戸時代の江尻宿には複数の町が存在し,各町に町頭(まちがしら)が置かれて町政にあたった。《東海道宿村大概帳》によれば,宿内町並みは東西13町余,人口は隣接する加宿(かしゅく)6村を含め6498人,家数は1340軒で,本陣2軒,脇本陣3軒,旅籠(はたご)屋40軒があった。江戸中期には江尻木綿の産地となっている。1924年1月に入江町,同年2月に清水市に編入された。
