A liturgy of monastic vows unique to the monastic life of the Catholic Church. After joining, members take temporary vows after completing a prescribed period of novitiate, then renew their vows for a certain period of time, and finally take perpetual vows. All vow ceremonies are held during Mass, following the Liturgy of the Word. The content is centered on vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience based on the exhortations of the Gospel, but each order also vows to consecrate their lives to God through that order, according to its unique spirituality and purpose. For this reason, the superior of the order witnesses the vows (Ordo professionis religiosae, 1970). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
