An ancient Japanese legal code. It is also read as Santeiritsuryō. It consists of 24 articles and was compiled in 769 (Jingo Keiun 3) by Kibi no Makibi and Yamato (Wa) Nagaoka, among others. It was put into effect in 791 (Enryaku 10) and ceased in 812 (Kōnin 3). The systematic compilation of ritsuryo codes in Japan ended with the Yoro Code, which followed the Taiho Code. Subsequent partial revisions to the ritsuryo code were made by individual decrees, or kiyaku, issued by imperial decree or other means, without amending the code itself. However, this Sōtei ritsuryo is presumed to have revised the Yoro Code itself, although it was limited to 24 articles. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
