Kumasakagai (Kumasakagai) - Carrier shell

Kumasakagai (Kumasakagai) - Carrier shell
A gastropod of the family Polytminae (illustration). The shell is cone-shaped, up to 4cm high and 7cm wide, with a flat base and a wide, slightly concave shape. Shells and pebbles are attached to the top of the shell to reinforce it, but depending on the conditions of the seabed, there are cases where more shells are attached or more stones are attached, and the former are sometimes jokingly called "conchologists" and the latter "geologists." When attaching bivalves, the inside is always facing up, and in the case of long, thin gastropods, the thin end is usually attached first.
