Born in 1772. A shogunate official. Studied under Asada Goryu. In 1817, he went on a business trip to Matsumae in Ezochi (Hokkaido) to learn Russian and translated a dictionary he had acquired. In 1836, he became an astronomy official and was involved in the Tenpo calendar reform. He passed away on July 1, 1840, at the age of 77. He was from Osaka. His real surname was Chatan.
