Diet therapy (Dietary therapy)

Japanese: 食事療法(食餌療法) - しょくじりょうほう（英語表記）diet therapy

A medical therapy in which a patient is given a certain diet in order to achieve the goal of treatment and improve the progress of the disease. The food given to the patient is called a "patient's diet," and diets that are specifically designed for treatment are called "therapeutic diets." In dietary therapy, a doctor prepares a diet plan, a nutritionist creates a menu based on this plan, and the therapy is carried out at home or in a hospital. In general, it is important to pay attention to the following points: (1) the food should be easy to digest and absorb, (2) the food should be prepared with attention to the patient's preferences and should not cause the patient to tire of the food, (3) foods should be selected to avoid nutrient deficiencies, (4) appropriate portions should be considered depending on the patient's condition, and (5) hygiene should be taken into particular consideration when preparing the food.

病人に一定の食事を与え，それによって治療の目的を果たし，また病気の経過をよくするために行う療法。病人に与える食事を病人食といい，とくに治療を目的としたものを治療食という。食事療法を行うにあたっては，医師が食事箋を作成し，これに基づいて栄養士が献立をつくって，家庭や病院で実施される。食事療法全般については，(1)消化吸収が容易であること，(2)患者の嗜好に注意して調理し，あきがこないようにすること，(3)栄養素が不足しないように食品を選ぶこと，(4)病状によって，適切な量を配慮すること，(5)調理にあたってはとくに衛生に気をつけること，などの点に注意することがたいせつである。
