The name of a region centered on the Swat Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in northwestern Pakistan. It refers to the middle and upper reaches of the Swat River, a tributary of the Kabul River that flows through the Peshawar Basin, and is surrounded by mountains. The central city is Mingora. Buddhist culture flourished from the 2nd century BC to the 9th century AD, and many ruins from the ancient Gandhara Kingdom, including Butkara and Udegram, remain. Swat.
