Machiko Ogimachi

Year of birth: Unknown A poet of waka literature in the early Edo period. She was the illegitimate daughter of Gon Dainagon Masagimachi Sanetyo and the half-sister of Shinto-ka Kinmichi. Her first name was Benshi. She went to Edo at the age of 16, and, taking the surname Tanaka, became a concubine to Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, a chamberlain to Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. In 1694 (Genroku 7), she gave birth to Yoshiyasu's fourth son, Tsunetaka, and in 1696 (Genroku 9), his fifth son, Tokimune. The "Nyoyoshu Senshu" (1704 preface) is a private collection that fully conveys her image. The "Shoin Nikki" (perhaps completed by 1714), which meticulously describes Yoshiyasu's glory as a shogunate official and his literary efforts, is highly regarded to this day. "From this time in the second year of the Jokyo era until the sixth and seventh years of the Hoei era, the Yanagisawa family prospered, but her writing style is in the style of Eiga Monogatari and Zoku Sekei. 江戸初期の和歌文学者。権大納言正親町実豊の庶腹の子,神道家公通の異母妹。初名弁子。16歳で江戸に下向,田中氏を称して徳川綱吉の側用人柳沢吉保の側室となる。元禄7(1694)年に吉保の4男経隆,同9年に5男時睦を生む。『如葉集千首』(1704年序)はその面影を十分に伝える私家集。吉保の幕閣としての栄華と文学的精進を細やかに綴った『松蔭日記』(1714年までに成立か)は,今に至るまで高い評価を得ている。「貞享二年の此より宝永六七年までの柳沢家の繁栄なりしを,栄花物語,続世継などの文体にかけり。筆たけて源氏物語よむこゝちす」(岡本保孝『難波江』)。<著作>『松蔭日記』(『女流文学全集』1巻)
