An annual weed of the Lythraceae family that grows in paddy fields and marshes (illustration). The stem is 10-15 cm long, stretches at the bottom, sends out roots from the nodes, and slopes upward at the top. The leaves are opposite, elliptical, sessile, rounded at the tip, 5-10 mm long, 3-5 mm wide, entire and hairless. The flowers are small and stalkless and appear in the leaf axils from August to October. The calyx is tubular, 1.5 mm long, and has four lobes with triangular lobes that are pointed at the tip. There are four very small, heart-shaped petals. There are four stamens attached to the calyx tube and one pistil. In sunny places, the whole plant may turn red. 水田や湿地に生えるミソハギ科の一年生雑草(イラスト)。茎は長さ10~15cm,下部が張って節から根を出し,上部は斜上する。葉は対生し,楕円形,無柄で先は円く,長さ5~10mm,幅3~5mm,全縁で毛がない。花は8~10月ごろ葉腋(ようえき)につき,小さくて柄がない。萼は筒状で長さ1.5mm,4裂して裂片は三角形で先がとがる。花弁はごく小さく心形で4枚。おしべは4本,萼筒につき,めしべは1本。日当りのよいところでは全体が赤く色づくことがある。
