Japanese: ホシハジロ(星羽白) - ホシハジロ（英語表記）pochard

A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). It breeds from Europe to southern Siberia, and migrates to Europe and southern Asia in winter. It also migrates to Japan as a winter bird, living mainly in freshwater areas such as lakes and rivers. It occasionally breeds in Hokkaido. It feeds mainly on young shoots and roots of aquatic plants, which it eats by diving underwater. It also catches animal matter such as crustaceans, mollusks, insects, and amphibians. Total length is about 48 cm. The male has a dark chestnut-colored head and neck, a blackish chest, and a white back with fine black patterns, and appears gray from a distance.

カモ目カモ科の鳥（イラスト）。ヨーロッパからシベリア南部まで繁殖し，冬季はヨーロッパやアジアの南部に渡る。日本にも冬鳥として渡来し，主として湖沼や河川などの淡水域にすむ。北海道ではまれに繁殖することもある。餌は水草の若芽や根などが多く，水中に潜って食べる。また，甲殻類，軟体動物，昆虫類，両生類など動物質もとる。全長約48cm。雄は頭頸（とうけい）部が濃いくり色で，胸は黒っぽく，背は白地に黒色の細かい模様があり，遠方からは灰色に見える。
