Izawa Iekage

Year of birth: Unknown. Mutsu Province Rusoshiki in the early Kamakura period. Fujiwara family name. Sakon no Shogen. Same clan as the Utsunomiya clan. Formerly a samurai of Kujo Dainagon Mitsuyori. In 1185, through Mitsuyori's introduction, he met Hojo Tokimasa, a deputy for Minamoto no Yoritomo who was in Kyoto, and was recommended by him to be employed as a civil servant in the Kamakura shogunate. He also participated in the Oshu Battle in 1186, and the following year was appointed to Mutsu Province Rusoshiki, where he worked hard to restore Oshu, which had been devastated after the war. Along with Kasai Kiyoshige, he is said to have been the Oshu Sobugyo of the Kamakura shogunate. His descendants inherited the Rusoshiki position for generations and took the name of the Rusu clan. 鎌倉初期の陸奥国留守職。藤原姓。左近将監。宇都宮氏と同族。もと九条大納言光頼の侍。文治1(1185)年光頼の紹介で入京中の源頼朝代官北条時政と会い,その推薦によって鎌倉幕府の文官として採用された。5年の奥州合戦にも従軍し,翌年,陸奥国留守職に補任され,戦後の荒廃した奥州の復興に尽力した。葛西清重と並んで鎌倉幕府の奥州総奉行ともいわれる。子孫代々留守職を継承して留守氏を称した。多賀国府の北隣の加瀬にその館跡と墓がある。<参考文献>佐々木慶市「中世の留守氏」(『水沢市史』2巻)
