A former town in Yamamoto County, in the northwestern tip of Akita Prefecture. Terraces have developed on the Japan Coast, and the Gono Line runs along the coast. Copper smelting was once carried out in Hassei, and the Hachimori oil field was also excavated. The town is known for its sandfish fishing and for the mikoshi (portable shrine) bathing in the waterfall at Shirataki Shrine. Iwadate Coast is a scenic spot. In 1993, the Shirakami Mountains were added to the list of natural heritage sites under the World Heritage Convention. In March 2006, it merged with Minehama Village, Yamamoto County, to become Hachimine Town, Yamamoto County. Area: 112.62 km2 . Population: 4,759 (2003). 秋田県北西端,山本郡の旧町。日本海岸に段丘が発達,沿岸に五能線が通じる。かつては発盛(はっせい)では銅製錬が行われ,八森油田も発掘された。ハタハタの漁獲や白瀑(しらたき)神社の神輿(みこし)の滝浴びで知られる。岩館海岸は景勝地。1993年白神山地が世界遺産条約の自然遺産リストに登録された。2006年3月,山本郡峰浜村と合併し町制,山本郡八峰町となる。112.62km2。4759人(2003)。
