[1] (Noun) (Said to have originated from the rice planting ritual at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine in Sumiyoshi, Osaka) 1. A dance performed on the streets by monks who prayed during the Edo period. Wearing white robes, loincloths, hand guards, leg warmers , red apron, and straw sandals on bare feet, the dancers held fans in their hands, forming groups of several. One of the dancers held up a large long-handled umbrella with red silk draped around the edge and a sacred wand attached to the end, and beat the handle with a split bamboo, chanting "Finally, come on! You're doing well!" while dancing around the umbrella. This was the predecessor of "Kappore." Shisha-odori. (Season: Summer) *Haiku poem, Itokusou (1661), 1. "Matsu no hanagasa wa Sumiyoshi odorikana (Michikan)" 2. A toy made of a round straw hat with red silk draped around the edge. It imitates the umbrella used in 1.
