Japanese: 住吉具慶 - すみよし・ぐけい
Sumiyoshi Gukei
Year of death: 25 April 1705
Year of birth: 1631
One of the leading Yamato-e painters of the early Edo period. Born in Kyoto as the eldest son of Jokei Hiromichi. His first name was Hirozumi, and later Hirosumi. He was commonly known as Naiki. His other name was Matsuiwa. On May 17, 1674 (Enpo 2), he shaved his head and was ordained by Myoho-in Gyojo Hoshinno, taking the Buddhist name Gukei, and on June 4 of the same year, he was bestowed the title of Hokkyo. In the sixth year of the same year, he produced the "Ireduregusa Sketchbook" (Tokyo National Museum) when Asukai Masaaki's granddaughter married into the Matsudaira family of Echizen. In the seventh year of the same year, he completed the "Toshogu Engi-e" (The Origin of the Toshogu Shrine), which his father Jokei had left unfinished, and brought it to Edo, where he received 200 ryo as a reward from Shogun Ietsuna. At that time, he produced the "Gensan Daishi Engi-e" and "Jigen Daishi Engi-e" (both in the Kan'ei-ji Temple collection) at the Kan'ei-ji Temple where he was staying. In the same year, he was ordered by the Imperial Court to copy "Essays on Annual Events." In 1683, he was summoned to Edo and became an official painter for the shogunate, which had a monopoly on the Kano school. In 1691, he became an inner circle physician and was ordained a hōgen along with Kano Masunobu and Kitamura Kigin. He was buried at Rosan-ji Temple in Kyoto and Gokoku-in Temple at Kan'ei-ji Temple. In addition to the above, his representative works include "City and Country Scroll" (owned by Kofuku-in Temple) and "The Tale of Genji Illustrated Scroll" (private collection). <References> Omura Seigai (ed.), "A Complete View of Oriental Art," vol. 5
