A branch of geography alongside systematic geography. A discipline that classifies, studies, and describes the geographical circumstances of a certain "region." The descriptions are called regional geographies, and there are various types such as local histories, regional histories, and national histories. In the past, regional geography was used indiscriminately to record information on customs, habits, myths, and legends, but in modern geography, it is positioned as a branch that describes various regions in relation to general geography.

系統地理学と並ぶ地理学の一部門。ある〈地域〉の地理的事情を分類，研究，記述する学問。記述されたものは地誌と呼ばれ，郷土誌，地方誌，各国誌などいろいろの類がある。古くは風俗，習慣，神話，伝説に至るまで無差別に記入されていたが，近代的地理学のなかでは，地理学通論に対して各地の記述を行う部門として位置づけられている。
