The capital of Sumy Oblast in north-central Ukraine. Population 293,000 (2001). Located about 150 km northwest of Kharkov, it is connected by rail. The city was founded in 1652 and was attacked by the Tatars based in Crimea, but later became a trading center and prospered. Currently, the city is home to the Frunze Memorial Chemical Plant, as well as factories producing compressors, electron microscopes, foundries, sugar refining, brewing, and meat processing. There are also cultural facilities such as an art gallery, a local museum, and a theater, as well as a symphony orchestra.
