Sumi - Sumi (English spelling) Сумы/Sumï

The capital of Sumy Oblast in north-central Ukraine. Population 293,000 (2001). Located about 150 km northwest of Kharkov, it is connected by rail. The city was founded in 1652 and was attacked by the Tatars based in Crimea, but later became a trading center and prospered. Currently, the city is home to the Frunze Memorial Chemical Plant, as well as factories producing compressors, electron microscopes, foundries, sugar refining, brewing, and meat processing. There are also cultural facilities such as an art gallery, a local museum, and a theater, as well as a symphony orchestra.

ウクライナ中北部、スーミ州の州都。人口29万3000（2001）。ハリコフの北西約150キロメートルにあり、鉄道が通じる。市は1652年に創設され、クリミアに本拠をもつタタール人の襲撃を受けたが、のち交易の中心となり、繁栄した。現在、フルンゼ記念化学プラント施設があるほか、コンプレッサー、電子顕微鏡、鋳造、精糖、醸造、食肉加工などの工場が立地する。絵画館、郷土館、劇場などの文化施設や交響楽団も置かれている。
