Zumi - Zumi

Japanese:
Zumi - Zumi

A deciduous tall tree of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It can reach a height of 5-8 meters, but occasionally reaches 10 meters. The trunk is gray-brown, with small warty lenticels on the stem. The young branches are initially hairy, but later become hairless, and the twigs may become prickly. The leaves are alternate, simple, and hairy on both sides. The leaves on the long branches are 3-lobed to shallowly lobed, with serrated edges. The leaves that grow in whorls at the top of the short branches are almost unincised, and entire. In May and June, several white, 5-petaled flowers about 2.5 cm in diameter bloom at the ends of the short branches. There are 20 stamens, 3-4 pistils, and an upper ovary. The fruit is pear-shaped, spherical, 5-7 mm in diameter, and ripens red. It grows in mountainous areas and is distributed throughout Japan and China. There are two theories about the name: one is that the bark is used as a dye, so it is called "sumi" (dye), and the other is that the fruit is sour, so it is called "suru" (sour fruit). It is used as a rootstock for apples and Japanese lantern plants. The leaves of the Oozumi variety on the long branches are large, barely divided, and have almost no sawtooth.
