Haiku is a form of poetry in which poets compete to get the most points by asking a judge to grade their poems. As Basho wrote in "Third-class essays" (written in 1695 to Kyokusui) that "I spend day and night trying to get points, running around without seeing the path to victory," quick recitation and quick scoring was in vogue. Kikaku stamped the mark "Half-faced beauty" on humorous haiku poems that got high marks, encouraging a competition to get points. It was especially popular in Edo, Kyoto, and Osaka during the Kyoho period (1716-36), when the ranks were determined by calculating the points of all the participants (renju) based on a hundred verses, and prizes were also offered for the occasion.
