Iconium; Ikonion

An ancient city in Asia Minor. Greek name Iconium. Now Konya, Turkey. Surrounded by fertile plains, it was a Phrygian (→Phrygia) city that originated from the world's oldest settlement from the 3rd millennium BC. It belonged to the Hittite Empire, was infiltrated by Greek civilization from around the 3rd century BC, and by 25 BC it had been part of the Roman province of Galatia. In 130 it became a Roman colony (colonia), and around 372 it became the capital of Lycaonia. It was invaded by Arabs in the 7th to 9th centuries, and was taken from the Byzantine Empire by the Seljuk Turks at the end of the 10th century.
