Oblomov - Oblomov (English spelling) Oblomov

Oblomov - Oblomov (English spelling) Oblomov

A full-length novel by Russian author Goncharov. Published in 1859. The protagonist, Oblomov, is exceptionally kind and highly intelligent, but he grew up in a remote area under a patriarchal system, being treated like a serf, and has become lazy and unable to do anything for himself. He is unable to respond to the friendship of the active bourgeois Stolz or the love of his progressive daughter Olga, and he ends up quietly living with the devoted widow Agafya. In his essay What is the Oblomov Temperament? (1859), Dobrolyubov explained the significance of the work's criticism of serfdom, and added Oblomov to the lineage of "superfluous" protagonists who appeared in Russian literature in the first half of the 19th century, such as Onegin, Pechorin from A Hero of Our Time, and Luzhin. Since then, the term "oblomovshchina" (the Oblomov temperament) has become synonymous with idleness for Russians, but the eternal value of the novel lies in the fact that Oblomov belongs to a type that can be applied to all of humanity in a broader sense.
