Large ocular or lenticular mineral grains or mineral aggregates that appear eye-shaped in thin sections. They are commonly found in gneisses and unfragmented schists. They are formed by (1) flow banding of phenocrysts in syntectonic igneous rocks, (2) the growth of porphyroblasts in banded rocks, (3) the fracture and reduction of large crystals, or (4) the fracture and reduction of breccia fragments [Bowes: 1989]. Augen means eye in German.

眼球状またはレンズ状の大きな鉱物粒または鉱物の集合体で,薄片で目の形に観察されるもの.これらは一般に片麻岩や破砕をまぬがれた片岩の中に見られる.これは(1) 同構造時(syntectonic)の火成岩体の班晶の流動縞による,(2) 縞状岩石での斑状変晶の成長,(3) 大きな結晶が破砕して縮小変形したもの,(4) 角礫岩化した破片が破砕して縮小変形したもの,などにより形成される[Bowes : 1989].ドイツ語でAugenは目の意味.
