Large ocular or lenticular mineral grains or mineral aggregates that appear eye-shaped in thin sections. They are commonly found in gneisses and unfragmented schists. They are formed by (1) flow banding of phenocrysts in syntectonic igneous rocks, (2) the growth of porphyroblasts in banded rocks, (3) the fracture and reduction of large crystals, or (4) the fracture and reduction of breccia fragments [Bowes: 1989].
