A large bamboo of the Poaceae family. It is also known as Shinodake (Shinotake). The culms are straight, with one branch emerging from each node, mainly from the top. The long, slender leaves hang down beautifully. As the name suggests, it has long been used for bows and arrows. It grows wild widely from the Kanto region southwards, and the larger ones can reach a diameter of 2cm and a height of 5m, with low nodes and long internodes on the stem. It has about 10 spikelets and 3 stamens. The culms are used for bows and arrows as well as fishing rods, and are also cultivated for decorative purposes. It is cultivated throughout the country, and can also be found in parts of China and Taiwan. Rakkyoyadake (薤矢鳥) cv. Tsutsumiana has alternating internodes on the culms and rhizomes, resembling a row of scallions. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
