Obama Domain

This domain was located in Obama, Onyu County, Wakasa Province (Fukui Prefecture). In 1587 (Tensho 15), Asano Nagamasa was appointed as the lord of the entire Wakasa Province. In 1594 (Bunroku 3), the Asano clan moved to Kai Province, and Wakasa was divided and given to Kinoshita Katsutoshi (62,000 koku) and his younger brother Toshifusa (20,000 koku). In 1600 (Keicho 5), Kyogoku Takatsugu joined the Eastern Army in the Battle of Sekigahara, and was appointed from Otsu in Omi Province in recognition of his military achievements. With subsequent increases, he was given a total of 113,500 koku. Takatsugu abandoned the old castle and began construction of Obama Castle in Unpin, a seaside area, the following year. In 1609, Tadataka succeeded him as head of the family. In 1634 (Kan'ei 11), Tadataka was transferred to Matsue and replaced by Sakai Tadakatsu, lord of Kawagoe Castle, with a stipend of 113,500 koku. Tadakatsu was appointed as Tairo in 1638 and was highly trusted by Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, playing an active role as a central figure in the Shogunate government. Obama Castle (also known as Unpo Castle) was completed after 41 years of construction, during which time many young people from farming villages were conscripted and heavy taxes were imposed, resulting in the residents of 253 villages rising up in protest. After that, in 1656 (Meireki 2), the second lord Tadanao succeeded him, followed by Tadataka and Tadasono, and the fifth lord Tadaoto held important positions such as Magistrate of Temples and Shrines, Osaka Castle Governor, and Roju. They were followed by Tadaakira, Tadamochi and Tadayo, and under the ninth lord, Tadatsura, the domain school Junzokan was founded and opened in 1774 (An'ei 3). The next lord, Tadayuki, served as the Magistrate of Temples and Shrines, Kyoto Shoshidai and Senior Councillor. The 11th lord, Tadayori, retired after a few years. The 12th lord, Tadaaki, served as the Sojaban (Sōjaban) Magistrate of Temples and Shrines and Kyoto Shoshidai, and was an aide to the Chief Minister Ii Naosuke, playing an active role in dealing with issues of imperial charter for treaties and the Shogunate succession. The next lord was Tadauji, and under his successor, Tadatomi, the domain was returned to the Emperor in 1869 (Meiji 2). The domain was abolished in 1971, and after passing through Obama Prefecture and Tsuruga Prefecture, it was incorporated into Fukui Prefecture, which was re-established in 1981.

若狭(わかさ)国（福井県）遠敷(おにゅう)郡小浜に置かれた藩。1587年（天正15）浅野長政(ながまさ)が若狭一国の領主として入封。1594年（文禄3）浅野氏は甲斐(かい)に転じ、若狭は木下勝俊(かつとし)（6万2000石）、その弟利房(としふさ)（2万石）に分封。1600年（慶長5）京極高次(きょうごくたかつぐ)が関ヶ原の戦いで東軍に属し、その戦功により近江(おうみ)の大津より入封。その後の加増もあわせて11万3500石。高次は旧来の古城を廃して翌01年より海辺の地雲浜(うんぴん)に小浜城の築城を始めた。1609年忠高が家督を継いだ。1634年（寛永11）忠高を松江に移し、かわって川越城主酒井忠勝(ただかつ)が11万3500石で入部。忠勝は38年大老に就任、将軍徳川家光(いえみつ)の信任厚く、幕政の中心人物として活躍した。小浜城（雲浜城ともいう）は前後41年を費やしていちおう完成、その間、多数の農村の若者を徴発し、かつ重税を課したため、253か村の住民が抗議して立ち上がるという事件が起きた。その後、1656年（明暦2）2代忠直(ただなお)が後を継ぎ、忠隆(ただたか)、忠囿(ただその)と続き、5代忠音(ただおと)は寺社奉行(ぶぎょう)、大坂城代、老中の要職を歴任。その後、忠存(ただあきら)、忠用(ただもち)、忠與(ただよし)と続き、9代忠貫(ただつら)のとき1774年（安永3）に藩校順造館を創立開校した。ついで10代忠進(ただゆき)は寺社奉行、京都所司代(しょしだい)、老中などを歴任。11代忠順(ただより)は数年で隠居。12代忠義(ただあき)は奏者番(そうじゃばん)兼寺社奉行、京都所司代を勤め、大老井伊直弼(いいなおすけ)の腹心として条約勅許問題や将軍継嗣(けいし)問題の処理に活躍した。次が忠氏(ただうじ)、その次忠禄(ただとみ)のとき1869年（明治2）に版籍を奉還。71年廃藩、小浜県、敦賀(つるが)県を経て、81年再置の福井県に編入された。
