A deity enshrined in the storeroom. Usually, Ebisu or Daikoku is enshrined on a shelf in the storeroom, but the hidden Christians enshrined holy images. The Christians of Hirado and Ikitsuki (Nagasaki Prefecture) and those of Nagasaki and Kurosaki have different forms of faith, with the former focusing on storeroom gods and the latter on ocho (paper curtains). The two groups also differ in the way they recite orasho (prayers) and in the organization of their followers, but the former shows an earlier cultural contact. Storeroom gods are found in the house of the guard. They are hidden in the storeroom and are enshrined there even during festivals, and only the guard can touch them. Other followers worship them from a long room. Many storeroom gods are images of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus. The basic form of the Virgin Mary, dressed in a kimono and with her breasts exposed, holding Jesus in her left hand, who blesses her with his right hand and holds a scroll in his left, remains. This is a unique folk belief deity that continued to adhere to the Catholic faith during the prohibition of Christianity in the Edo period and was assimilated into Japanese culture.
