Nomi no Sukune

An ancient legend about a person, the ancestor of the Haji clan. He is also written as Haji no Mi no Sukune (Harima no Kuni Fudoki). In the "Nihon Shoki" Emperor Suinin's 7th year, July entry, he is said to have been from Izumo Province (Shimane Prefecture), and was summoned to wrestle with Taima no Kehaya, killing him and serving the Emperor. In the 32nd year, July entry, he is said to have led the Izumo Hajibe to make the first Haniwa clay figures at the funeral of Empress Hibasuhime. Similar legends appear in the Shoku Nihongi, Ruiju Sandai Kaku, and Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku, and, together with the story of the grave of Haji Nomi no Sukune in the Harima no Kuni Fudoki, all of them explain the origin of the Haji clan's duties related to funerals. According to the Shinsen Shojiroku, Nomi no Sukune was the 14th generation descendant of Amanohohi no Mikoto, the distant ancestor of the Izumo no Omi, and his name comes from the place name "Nomi" in the Iishi County section of the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki.

古代の伝承上の人物、土師連(はじのむらじ)の祖。土師弩美宿禰(はじののみのすくね)とも記す（播磨国風土記(はりまのくにふどき)）。『日本書紀』垂仁(すいにん)天皇7年7月条に、出雲(いずも)国（島根県）の人で、召されて当麻蹶速(たいまのけはや)と角力(すもう)をとり、これを殺して天皇に仕えたとあり、同32年7月条には、皇后日葉酢媛(ひばすひめ)の葬に際し出雲の土部(はじべ)を率い初めて埴輪(はにわ)をつくったとある。同様の伝承は『続日本紀(しょくにほんぎ)』『類聚三代格(るいじゅうさんだいきゃく)』『日本三代実録』にもみえ、『播磨国風土記』の土師弩美宿禰の墓山の話とあわせ、いずれも喪葬にかかわった土師氏の職務の起源を説いたものである。『新撰姓氏録(しんせんしょうじろく)』によれば、野見宿禰は出雲臣(おみ)の遠祖天穂日命(あまのほひのみこと)の14世孫で、その名は『出雲国風土記』飯石(いいし)郡条に記す「野見」の地名によっている。
