[由来] 「韓非子―難なん一」に出てくる話から。その昔、中国の楚その国に、盾たて（剣や矢を受け止める防具）と矛ほこ（剣の一種）を売っている人がいました。彼は、「私の盾は堅くて、どんな矛も突き破ることはできない」と言う一方で、「私の矛は鋭くて、どんな盾でも突き破ることができる」とも宣伝しています。そこである人が、「子しの矛を以もって子の楯（盾）を陥とおさば、何如いかん（おまえさんの矛でおまえさんの盾を突いたら、どうなるのか）」と尋ねると、その商人は答えに詰まってしまったということです。
