Turbine - Turbin (English spelling) turbine

A rotary machine that converts the kinetic energy of flowing water, steam, gas, air, etc. into useful mechanical work. It began in the early 19th century when Frenchman Laude Burdin (1790-1873) called a new type of water wheel a turbine. A water turbine uses the energy of flowing water by dropping water from a high dam and hitting it against blades. Depending on the type, there is the Pelton turbine, Francis turbine, Kaplan turbine, etc. A steam turbine has many blades around a cylinder and sprays steam from a nozzle to rotate at high speed. Depending on the type, there is the de Laval turbine, Parsons turbine, etc. All turbines are of impulse type and reaction type. A gas turbine uses the energy of high-temperature, high-pressure gas. An air turbine uses the energy of high-pressure compressed air. Both water turbines and steam turbines are used to run generators at thermal power plants and nuclear power plants.

流水、蒸気、ガス、空気などの運動エネルギーを有用な機械的仕事に変換する回転型の機械。19世紀初頭、フランスのブールダンLaude Burdin（1790―1873）が新型の水車をタービンとよんだのが始まりである。高所のダムから水を落とし、それを翼に当てて流水のエネルギーを利用するのが水力タービンで、その形式によりペルトンタービン、フランシスタービン、カプランタービンなどがある。円筒の周囲に多数の羽根を植え付け、それに蒸気をノズルより噴き付けて高速回転を得るのが蒸気タービンで、その形式によりド・ラバルタービン、パーソンスタービンなどがある。いずれのタービンも衝動型と反動型とがある。高温・高圧のガスの有するエネルギーを利用するのがガスタービンである。また高圧の圧縮空気の有するエネルギーを利用するのが空気タービンである。水力タービン、蒸気タービンとも火力発電所、原子力発電所などで発電機を動かすのに利用されている。
