The capital of the county of the same name, located at the southern end of Lake Vättern in southern Sweden. Population 115,000 (1996). An industrial city along the Göta Canal and railway that connects Stockholm with Gothenburg on the west bank, the match industry has a tradition dating back to 1844. There are also many factories producing paper, wool, chemical fibers, machinery, shoes, etc. The city originated as a settlement from 1284, and was burned down by the Danes in 1612, but was rebuilt by Gustav Adolf. There are churches from the 14th to 17th centuries, as well as a courthouse and town hall from the 17th century.

スウェーデン南部のベッテル湖南端にある同名県の県都。人口11万5000(1996)。ストックホルムと西岸のイェーテボリを結ぶイェータ運河と鉄道に沿う工業都市で，マッチ工業は1844年以来の伝統を持つ。紙，毛織物，化学繊維，機械，靴などの工場も多い。市は1284年からの集落に起源を持ち，1612年デーン人の焼打ちに遭ったが，グスタブ･アドルフによって再建。14～17世紀の教会，17世紀の裁判所や市庁舎がある。
