Buffeting is a phenomenon in which the airflow around an airplane separates from the surface of the aircraft, creating vortices that strike and vibrate the aircraft. Buffeting makes passenger planes uncomfortable to ride on, and in military aircraft it makes it difficult to aim. If an airplane slows down too much or makes unnatural movements, the airflow can separate over parts of the wing, causing buffeting, before it enters a full stall. However, this phenomenon is useful for predicting danger, and is actively used in stall warnings and other situations. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
