Public health nurse

Japanese: 保健婦 - ほけんふ

A woman who works at a public health center, municipal office, business, hospital, school, etc. and provides health guidance and medical treatment guidance. Qualified nurses can earn their qualifications by completing the necessary courses for more than six months at a school designated by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, or graduating from a training institute designated by the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare, and then passing a national examination. The status and duties of public health nurses, midwives and nurses were stipulated in the Public Health Nurse, Midwife and Nurse Act (1948), and only women were allowed to become nurses. In 1968, the act was amended to allow men to become qualified, but the titles public health nurses and public health nurses differed depending on gender. In 2002, the act was renamed the Public Health Nurse, Midwife and Nurse Act, and public health nurses were changed to public health nurses.

保健所，市町村，事業所，病院，学校などに勤務し，保健指導や療養指導を行う女性。看護婦の有資格者が，文部科学大臣指定の学校で６ヵ月以上必要な学科を修めるか，厚生労働大臣指定の養成所を卒業したのち，国家試験に合格して資格を得る。身分・業務は保健婦助産婦看護婦法（1948年）に規定され，女子のみであった。68年に同法が改正されて男子も資格を取得できるようになったが，性別で保健婦／保健士と呼称が異なっていた。2002年同法は〈保健師助産師看護師法〉と改称され，保健婦（士）は保健師に改められた。
