A genus of the Solanaceae family found in tropical and subtropical America. There are about 150 species, and several species are cultivated as greenhouse or outdoor flowering trees. They have alternate leaves without sawtooth, and many fragrant tubular flowers in drooping racemes or corymbs. The yellow clove, native to Guatemala, is a semi-creeping shrub about 1.5m tall. Its orange-yellow flowers bloom from July to October. The red clove, native to Mexico, is a semi-creeping shrub that grows to a height of 1-3m with drooping branches, and its terminal inflorescences bloom with red-purple flowers in succession from July to September. Night jasmine is a shrub native to tropical America, but can also be cultivated outdoors in warm areas of Japan. It grows to a height of about 3.5m, and its greenish-white to cream-colored flowers give off a fragrant scent at night.
