A river that flows southeast through eastern Saitama Prefecture. It was originally the main stream of the Arakawa River. Its total length is about 61 km. It flows almost southeast from Kumagaya City, passes through Koshigaya City, and joins the Nakagawa River near Yoshikawa City. In 1629, the Kanto District Magistrate, Ina Tadaharu, closed off the old Arakawa River at Kuge, Kumagaya City, widened the course of the Wada Yoshino River to form the Arakawa River, and diverted it into the Irumagawa River at the time, changing its course. It is currently used as an irrigation canal and drainage channel. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
