A hunting method using devices to capture birds and animals. It has been widely used among many ethnic groups since ancient times, and its methods are extremely diverse and varied. In contrast to active hunting methods using bows and arrows, spears, blowguns, and guns, snares are devices that are set in the path of the prey and are used to capture the prey as it passes by unaware. They can be classified into pitfalls, noose traps, box traps, crushing traps, and traps, but there are many variations of each depending on the size and habits of the prey and the location conditions, and combinations of these are often devised. 鳥獣を捕獲するための装置による猟法。古くから諸民族の間に広く用いられてきた猟法で,その方法はきわめて多種多様で変化に富んでいる。弓矢,槍,吹矢,鉄砲などによる積極的な猟法に対して,わなは獲物の通り道に設置し,獲物がこれに気づかずに通過する際に捕らえようとする設備である。落し穴,くくりわな,箱わな,圧殺わな,とらばさみなどに分類することができるが,獲物の大きさや習性,立地条件などに応じて,それぞれ多様な変化形がみられ,これらを組み合わせたものがくふうされる。
