A compilation of various rules for composing renga. The name was originally given on the premise of the existence of the "Renga Honshiki," but the content of what it refers to is historically complicated, and is not clear, especially from the Kamakura period to the Nanboku-cho period. However, after the "Oan Shinshiki" established by Nijō Yoshimoto and Kyūsei in 1372 (Bunchū 1, Oan 5), it generally refers to that or a revised version of it. Major revisions were made by Ichijō Kaneyoshi in 1452 (Kyōtoku 1) and Shohaku in 1501 (Bunki 1), but the general outline of the "Oan Shinshiki" has not changed. It has also had a major influence on the stipulations of haiku in the early modern period.
