Soviet director and actor. Born into an aristocratic family in Moscow, he studied at Moscow University. In 1915 he joined the Vakhtangov Studio, initially working as a stage designer, before becoming an actor and director. From 1924 to 1931 he was a member of the Moscow Art Theatre, where he studied under Stanislavsky. At the same time, from 1924 to 1936 he headed the Zavatsky Studio in Moscow, where he tried to present classical plays with new interpretations and trained the next generation of actors. From 1936 to 1940 he directed at the Gorky Theatre in Rostov-on-Don, and from 1940 he was active as the chief director of the Mossovet Theatre in Moscow.

ソ連邦の演出家，俳優。モスクワの貴族の家に生まれ，モスクワ大学に学ぶ。1915年ワフタンゴフ･スタジオに入り，はじめ美術を担当し，やがて俳優，演出家になる。24年から31年までモスクワ芸術座に所属してスタニスラフスキーに師事した。そのかたわら，24年から36年までモスクワのザワツキー･スタジオを主宰，新解釈による古典劇の上演を試みながら後進を育てた。36年から40年までロストフ市のゴーリキー劇場で演出し，40年からモスクワのモスソビエト劇場の主任演出家として活躍する。
